Sky on fire - Emmy Laybourne
The book starts with a letter written by one of the characters, Alex Grieder, which consists of the list of all the children that are making a journey, all of which cannot be exposed to the air without suffering from drastic consequences depending on their blood types. Type AB blood causing paranoid delusions to the victim, type A causing blister and death, type B, being the least deadliest, have no visible effect but may suffer from reproductive failure as a cause, type O causing the victim to turn into a "bloodthirsty monster". We are informed that two kids, Caroline and Henry along with three others, stay at Greenway superstore, where they intend to take refuge until help arrives whereas the others hope to reach Denver International Airport, where there salvation lies.
Amongst the kids on the bus is Brayden Cutlass, who was shot in the shoulder by two strangers, the children earlier allowed in, Robby and Mr Appleton. We come to know that Robby had previously tried to molest one of the children and so was killed when he was caught in the attempt and Mr Appleton passed away in his sleep, their bodies are in the store of Greenway superstore. Due to their experience of being hospital to strangers, the children at the superstore refuse to allow other strangers that beg to be let in however they do throw food and supplies out for them from the roof. For the brief moment that they step out on to the roof, the sky is described as dark and has a mud-like appearance. We also witness Astrid, with blood type O, removing her gas mask and turning violent and almost attacking Caroline and Henry, after she has inhaled air and so they decide to set up the air purifiers to purify the air in the sealed environment of the superstore, which causes the electricity to run out, leaving them to fend on torch batteries in the store.
On the bus, we see some of the children suffering with hunger due to their inability to take off their masks to eat, whilst Sahalia is struggling to attend to Brayden, who is injured and in severe conditions. Josie is trying to be reassuring and calm and in an attempt to help Sahalia and stop her panicking so removes her gas mask, everyone is under the impression that she is a type AB, however she is overcome with a violent outbreak causing Niko to stop the bus and wrestle her and sedate her. In the struggle, Niko's mask is pushed off causing him to blister and cough out blood, because of suspected blistering and bleeding of the lungs due to the air. When driving along the road, the bus had to drive over a dead body in the middle of the road, along with many others loitered around on the road from people who had probably inhaled the air and suffered the lethal consequences.
